National Public Radion (NPR) bills itself as the public radio network renowned for journalistic excellence and standard-setting news, information, and cultural programming.

NPR was incorporated in 1970 pursuant to the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967. It is a non-profit membership media organization that serves as a national syndicator to public radio stations in the United States. While NPR does not carry "commercials," it broadcasts advertising from corporate and other sponsors in the form of "underwriting spots." Corporate sponsorship comprise a substantial minority portion of the NPR budget.

NPR stations periodically solicits public donations. As a result, NPR carries an appeal to listeners that is generally absent from commericial radio. The unique appeal is that listeners to NPR programming get to feel superior about being associated with an entity that apparently shuns money from big guys in favor of money from the little guy.
